Trooz
This page was last updated 11th December 2011

Trooz is situated in the Liège province of Belgium; about 120 km east of Brussels and 25 km south of the city of Liège

Commune web site. Trooz mountain bike club.

Getting there (from Brussels, Belgium)

  1. Take the E40 towards Liège.
  2. Take exit 39 (surprises you after one of the tunnels) towards Chênée and Chaudfontaine.
  3. Follow the road for a couple of blocks, then take a right into N61.
  4. Keep going straight, through Chaudfontaine, under a bridge and through a roundabout. Park up here if you fancy trails number 7 and/or 8, go further if you fancy trails number 8 and/or 9.

Map

A map with scale 1:15,000 is available.

Trail setup

These three trails are shared with horseback riders. Lots of overlapping with hiking trails as well.

Trail info

As official starting points are not clearly indicated on the map, I would suggest the following: A - the roundabout after having passed Chaudfontaine and entering Trooz (meeting point of rue Sainry, rue Grand' Rue and rue de Verviers); B - village of Nessonvaux.

Trails number 8 and 9 form the shape of an eight. Trail number 8 loops from village of Nessonvaux westwards through Trooz, where trail number 7 can be picked up. On its way back it overlaps (in opposite directions) with trail number 9, which loops south of Nessonvaux.

An alternative starting point for trails number 8 and 9 could be the small parking in Place Emile Vandervelde, just by the train station of Fraipont. Here blue and red trails overlap (in opposite directions).

Documentation on the Internet from another biker.

Interconnecting trails

Trail number 7 overlaps in the southwest with blue trail of Chaudfontaine.

The southmost corner of trail number 9 runs close to the yellow trail of updated Sprimont. This trail could possibly also be hooked up through the southmost corner of trail number 8.

The southmost corner of trail number 8 could possibly also be hooked up with trail number 9 of Theux.

Notes

I have visited this area several times since I found the trail map in my favourite map shop in Brussels many years ago now. Every time I have had to leave time-consuming trail exploring to another time.

In January 2010 I stopped long enough to find information signs for trails number 7 (yellow) and 8 (blue) in rue de la Fenderie, and too see the first off-road bit of trail number 8, at the corner of rue de Verviers and rue de la Resistance.

In October 2010, recuperating from surgery and way too weak to dare get up on my bike, I parked up at Place Emile Vandervelde in Fraipont, and hiked part of the red trail.

On the short stretch that I covered, signage seemed impeccable, although maybe a bit scarce. Just after having passed the railway station of Fraipont, you have to go left through what seems to be private property; you are to go up the few steps and through the passage with the barrier. Here starts a very loooong, in places very steep, climb; grass at first, but then solid rock, gulleys, loose rocks and mud.

Quite many interesting paths seem open to bikers, for additional trail-exploring. In August, the annual organized ride La Bataille des Ardennes takes place. I've never been to it, but it could be interesting for next year ..
