Coo
This page was created 3rd January 2011
Coo is situated in the Liège province of Belgium; about 160 km east of Brussels, some 40 km south of the city of Liège
The village of Coo is part of the commune of Stavelot.
Trail setup
Hill factor calculations above have all been done by extracting distance and height meter information from Rob's (ride profiles also available!). Please note, the trail information on www.mtbroutes.be is different. *sigh
These trails are not official. The time was once invested to set them up, but when I visited in May 2006, the word from the tourist office in Stavelot was that they are no longer maintained.
I believe all trails go past the waterfall in Coo. And, at least the red trail goes past Coo Bike.
Green trail is blue trail the opposite direction.
Rob conveys that red and blue loop are easily combined with each other.
Map and signage
Check out the forum message of 14th April 2010 on www.mountainbike.be, where a scanned map is being provided. If I recall correctly, this map is handed out by Coo Bike, a local bike shop that has received lots of good criticism from visiting bikers. (Sadly, I have misplaced my original copy of this map.)
All trail signs are PAINTED. Red trail is painted white circle with red arrow, blue trail is painted white circle with blue arrow (go figure) and green trail is painted white circle with green (really) arrow.
White trail, on the other hand, is painted as well, but with the international mountain bike sign; white triangle with two wheels below.
Since these trails are not offical, no official map exists any longer. Despite zero maintenance, as late as in October 2010, it was told on www.mtbroutes.be that signage on the blue trail is impeccable. Signage on the white trail, which is equally described on the Net as an aanrader (freely translated: "topper"), is unfortunately reported to be quite deteriorated.
Interconnecting trails
In the south, red trail for sure goes through the village of Trois-Ponts, which has three trails on offer. I would, however, not recommend heading out on them; signage may have been impeccable in 2006, but the rate of tarmac is way too high!
In the north, the southernmost bits of the trails 4 and 6 of Spa seem within bikeable distance. But, even closer by, is the trail system of La Gleize and Moulin du Ruy, overlapping a lot with at least the blue trail.
Notes
Somewhere I made notes! This was before I turned computeraholic and fanatic about keeping everything in an impeccable filing order. Argh.
When I visited here in May 2006 I was stunned to hear these trails were no longer maintained. Such a waste of time investment, in the first place! And sadder yet, these loops have (still) excellent reviews on the Internet!
Stavelot does have a large-scale topographic map to sell of the area, but it has been solely dedicated to hiking trails. Hmm .. should I interprete this as silent resistance and that possibly complaints have been made by other trail users?
With a map received for free from Coo Bike I dared the trail anyway. The blue trail I think it was, and it was one of the more beautiful trails I've ridden in this country; rough! Reviews on both www.mtbroutes.be and www.mountainbike.nl concur.
